Free Store and Community Sale
Located in the former LGBTQ+ Center in Lynn Hall, the Free Store is open and available to students 24/7 throughout the academic calendar year. Entirely based on donations, the Free Store offers clothing, linens, small electronics, books, and more to anyone who wishes to use the resource. This might mean a suit for a job interview, a blanket for a dorm room, or a pan for a new apartment kitchen.
The Free Store started in 2021 through the efforts of the Environmental Stewardship Committee, for the purpose of both reusing and recycling gently used items and to provide students with basic items they might need. It is managed by a student worker connected to the Federal Work Study Program.
In addition to the Free Store, the Office of Student Life sponsors an end of the academic year Community Sale in the Withrow Activity Center, also based entirely on donations from Hanover students, staff, and faculty. This big event is open to both the campus and larger Hanover-Madison community. This began in 2019, when Student Life wished to address the staggering number of items left in dormitories concluding move out at the end of the year.
